Manta Ray as unique drawing in style of "curve projection". |

( D e v e l o p m e n t ) The stingray represented here was “brought to life” by me in manual work in CAD. The problem – as mentioned - was the special design style, curve projection. This technology was well-known with technical draughtsmen to the mid-70’s. Up to this period all technical designs were provided by hand at the board, no matter whether it was simple gear wheels or complex vehicles. After CAD (computer Aided Design / computer-assisted designing) became well known in this business the above style of drawing went into oblivion.

Experiments showed, all printers tested so far (with which posters are usually produced) have problems with the conversion of this high-quality drawing, which is drawn in a line strength of 0.30 mm. If you take a close look at the detail pictures, you can tell why. Due to the fact that the motive is present now in digital form as CAD file, the print is being produced in highest quality in a renowned printing manufacture. Be assured: This is not ridiculous poster print, which you can order everywhere on the web or in a normal Copy shop. It is extremely difficult to convert this (because of vector format) 97.653.348 pixels large work file into a web-suitable format and at the same time to select an expressive dissolution. The reduced JPG file would have approx. 30 MB, therefore only excerpts are made available here, which however is a good example of the complete design.

( O r i g i n ) The original stingray displayed here is a famous drawing from 1973 in the Adam Opel AG in the german city of Rüsselsheim. In the idea of the famous insignia of the great Opel Manta A, which was on the front fenders of the vehicle. The drawing was used to experiment with the currently developing CAD technology. Designed to one of the world's first CAD machines in the automotive and plotted on high quality paper. Absolute high end of that era.
The first of these pictures was a gift to german Chancellor Willy Brandt who visited the company in that same year. This fact underlines the meaning and the value of this revolutionary technology in that time. Thus the motive stands not only representatively of an enormous technical milestone but was honoured by Willy Brandt himself. Naturally, the unique original is - like each gift - in federal possession. However it is well-known to me that it took a very long time, until the desired quality for the first print was set. Thus some copies must have been made with smaller errors. From this pre-production some (about 10 pieces world-wide) extracted itself from the arranged destruction and are now in private property. The object offered here is not a copy but inspired by the original. |

( O p t i o n ) The stingray is printed on white PVC so that the colour can not be absorbed by the foil. This helps to maintain a clear picture which is very important for this type of design. Even though a one-off production of this complex print is too expensive for the general market, you can own your personal copy on poster – personalized via CNC- technology. Great as shop decoration or for fan clubs. This print is resistant against humidity and much stronger than paper – it will look great at a diving-base as well as in a garage.
